SURFACE CONDITION
For best project results, the concrete should be in sound physical condition, free of extensive cracking, pitting and spalling. The surface must also be dry and clean and free of dust, dirt, efflorescence, oil, chemicals, pevious flaking coatings and other contaminants which may block effective long-term adhesion.

REPAIRS
For best visual results and long-term performance, cracks, holes and significant surface pitting should be filled with a cement patch material and allowed to cure as directed before proceeding.

EXPANSION JOINTS
Expansion joints in the concrete slab serve an important purpose, guarding against cracking in the slab due to movement — and should NOT be filled. If covering the expansion joints is still preferred, joints should first be treated with Weather Shield Flex Rubber Membrane and Flex seam mesh to minimize the chance of any cracking in the finish later due to slab movement.

SMOOTH SURFACES
Very smooth or "power troweled concrete" lacks optimal surface profile for most effective bond. In such cases, etching the concrete will add light bonding texture to the concrete and help ensure good "grab" of the coating. If etching is desired for an interior floor, use Natura Safe Etch as a safe alternative to muriatic acid. It will effectively clean the floor and add light bonding profile. See the surface preparation section for instructions on etching. Lightly rinse away etching / cleaning residue with water if there is adequate drainage. If there is no drainage, light rinsing followed by a wet vac will pull etching residues and dirt up off the floor.

***An alternative for ensuring good adhesion to smooth floors is to roll a coat of Weather Shield Flex Rubber Membrane (onto the washed and thoroughly dry floor). Flex will grip effectively to the smooth concrete and act as an effective bond enhancer for any Beauti-Tone decorative stone coating applied over top.

WASHING THE SURFACE
Removing all dirt, debris, etching residue and other contaminants is important for lasting performance. If the floor area is spacious and there is adequate drainage, an electric pressure washer can be used. Otherwise, mop the floor with a strong TSP (trisodium phosphate) solution. Follow by "rinsing" the floor with clean water mopping. Repeat until rinse water is clear. Let the floor dry until the following day before any coatings are applied. If the floor is a basement with limited air flow, circulating air in the room with a fan is a good idea to ensure effective drying.

MASKING / DROP SHEET USE
Protect adjoining walls and other objects prior to starting work.

Good surface preparation is easy if performed with attention to a few key details. For best results, follow written product instructions. For detailed preparation information, a visit to the surface preparation section is also recommended.

PROCEED WITH APPLICATION OF YOUR DESIRED FINISH ONLY WHEN PREPARATION STEPS ABOVE HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

HardRock Deck & Dock Application

HardRock Deck & Dock is an easy two-step application that quickly adds beauty and decorative functionality to interior concrete surfaces. It quickly covers drab concrete and lays down a visually appealing softly textured floor that lasts. With your interior concrete surface prepared as directed, proceed with the following application steps.

STEP ONE: Cut in along edges with a 4" paint brush and then roll on a uniform coat of HardRock Deck & Dock in 4 x 4 ft. sections as you progress using the specially recommended "UltraFab Duracover" 15mm roller (1656-001). As you go, run the roller lightly over the wet material several times to "massage" the texture. Continue in the same manner until the surface is completely covered. Patchiness or minor imperfections in the finish will be concealed when the second coat is applied. Allow several hours between coats. Test the surface before walking on it.

STEP TWO: Roll on a second coat with the same roller in a perpendicular direction (if possible). This will fill imperfections from the first application and make the surface look uniformly attractive. Let the surface cure fully until the following day (24 hours) or longer in cool or humid conditions.

Sealer: HardRock Deck & Dock, when used as an interior floor finish, should be top coated with two coats of HardRock Clear Coat Sealer a few hours apart, to make it more mar resistant and looking new. Alternatively, for ultimate durability on high traffic floor surfaces or demanding use areas,Beauti-Tone Epoxy Clear Coat is an ideal answer providing attractive sheen and a tough, wear resistant floor that's easy to clean. **Apply sealer or clear epoxy only after HardRock Deck & Dock has dried and cured for 24 hours.
