SURFACE CONDITION
For best project results, the concrete should be in sound physical condition, free of extensive cracking, pitting and spalling. The surface must also be dry and clean and free of dust, dirt, efflorescence, oil, chemicals, pevious flaking coatings and other contaminants which may block effective long-term adhesion.

REPAIRS
For best visual results and long-term performance, cracks, holes and significant surface pitting should be filled with a cement patch material and allowed to cure as directed before proceeding.

EXPANSION JOINTS
Expansion joints in the concrete slab serve an important purpose, guarding against cracking in the slab due to movement — and should NOT be filled. If covering the expansion joints is still preferred, joints should first be treated with Weather Shield Flex Rubber Membrane and Flex seam mesh to minimize the chance of any cracking in the finish later due to slab movement.

SMOOTH SURFACES
Very smooth or "power troweled concrete" lacks optimal surface profile for most effective bond. In such cases, etching the concrete will add light bonding texture to the concrete and help ensure good "grab" of the coating. If etching is desired for an interior floor, use Natura Safe Etch as a safe alternative to muriatic acid. It will effectively clean the floor and add light bonding profile. See the surface preparation section for instructions on etching. Lightly rinse away etching / cleaning residue with water if there is adequate drainage. If there is no drainage, light rinsing followed by a wet vac will pull etching residues and dirt up off the floor.

***An alternative for ensuring good adhesion to smooth floors is to roll a coat of Weather Shield Flex Rubber Membrane (onto the washed and thoroughly dry floor). Flex will grip effectively to the smooth concrete and act as an effective bond enhancer for any Beauti-Tone decorative stone coating applied over top.

WASHING THE SURFACE
Removing all dirt, debris, etching residue and other contaminants is important for lasting performance. If the floor area is spacious and there is adequate drainage, an electric pressure washer can be used. Otherwise, mop the floor with a strong TSP (trisodium phosphate) solution. Follow by "rinsing" the floor with clean water mopping. Repeat until rinse water is clear. Let the floor dry until the following day before any coatings are applied. If the floor is a basement with limited air flow, circulating air in the room with a fan is a good idea to ensure effective drying.

MASKING / DROP SHEET USE
Protect adjoining walls and other objects prior to starting work.

Good surface preparation is easy if performed with attention to a few key details. For best results, follow written product instructions. For detailed preparation information, a visit to the surface preparation section is also recommended.

PROCEED WITH APPLICATION OF YOUR DESIRED FINISH ONLY WHEN PREPARATION STEPS ABOVE HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

Interior Concrete Preparation

HardRock® Interior Concrete Application

HardRock is a three-step primerless application that will allow you to add a clean looking, uniformly textured, slip-resistant finish to practically any interior concrete surface.

STEP ONE: Roll a uniform coat of Beauti-Tone Textured Primer onto your clean and dry prepared surface. Allow it to dry for one-to two hours (longer in damp or cool conditions) before proceeding with step two.

STEP TWO: Cut in along edges with a 4" paint brush and then roll on a uniform coat of HardRock in 4 x 4 ft. sections using the"Tile Texture Roller" with medium downward pressure. The tile texture roller creates a softly textured surface with a balance of slip resistance and good cleanability. Application with the tile texture roller lays down HardRock a bit thicker and tends to hide most imperfections or patchiness on the floor being coated. Test the surface before walking on it. Allow the coating to cure 24 hours before walking on it.

STEP THREE: For best durability that stands up to continual traffic, dirt, stains and cleaning chamicals, top-coat your HardRock finish with Beauti-Tone® Epoxy Clear Coat. If more slip-resistance is required, the included anti-slip additive can be mixed into the epoxy coating prior to application.

*** OPTIONAL GROUT LINE & MORTAR JOINT EFFECTS: If a tile or flagstone effect is desired, a uniform coat of Beauti-Tone Textured Primer must be applied first in your desired "grout line / mortar joint" colour. When Primer is dry, lay down a pattern as desired onto the dry primer using Beauti-Tone Grout Line or Flagstone Stencil Tape. Brush some textured primer over the tape to lock it down before HardRock application as detailed above. (Leave the ends of the stencil tape free so you can pull it up later.) After HardRock has cured for 24 hours, PEEL UP THE STENCIL TAPE to reveal the pattern and sweep up any debris before application of sealer/clear coat.
